Well, there were many things. One of them being supplies and another, they had a great strategy. They island hopped, meaning they went from one island to another, taking control and then eventually surrounding and overwhelming the opponent. Also, when they realized that would not be enough, they threatened Japan to stop, and when they did not, USA dropped the bomb. Japan had to give in.
